2022 GWM Cannon X 4WD Ute Review

Cannon X – Last week I drove the Great Wall Motors Cannon X Ute. Its main claim to fame is that it is exceptionally well-equipped and well-priced. Being the top spec model, it had some small luxury features such as leather front seats with electronic heating, adjustable center screen and driver’s instrument panel. Tray for wireless smartphone charging and wired connection to Apple CarPlay and Android Auto.

Powered by a 2.0-litre turbodiesel engine that delivers 120kW and 400Nm. This drives all four wheels through an 8-speed ZF automatic transmission.

GWM 2022 4WD Ute profile

It has a few desirable extras like adjustable steering, a locking rear diff and a manual transmission.

Towing capacity is 3,000kg and the latest models have a five-star ANCAP safety rating.

Although it lacks power and torque, it drives easily on sandy and dirt roads. The suspension is a little firm, although it needs a bit of weight to soften the rear suspension a bit.

The Cannon X starts at $45,490 driven. It has many advantages, but also a few small things

More about GWM Cannon X

Great Wall Motors, now renamed GWM, had a rocky past with Utes in Australia. That’s definitely in the past though, as the latest Cannon X looks like someone took the Steed for a celebrity makeover and it came out a completely different Utah.

That’s good.

Launched here in late 2020, the Cannon X may well change people’s perception of Chinese utes.

There’s a lot to like about the Cannon X, as well as a few quirks.

What does Cannon X look like?

It’s actually not a bad ute. It has a big bold hood and gills with lots of American style chrome.

This shades the front automatic LED headlights, DRLs and directional fog lights

There are body-colored bumpers, wheel arches and mirrors.

In profile, the roof rails, running boards, sports bar and shark fin antennae are visible. The black color we had hides a lot of subtle styling details.

The rear is typical with dimensions and a convenient step in the bumper.

The tub has a sprayer in the tub liner and two upper attachment points next to the cabin and two lower attachment points at the rear. When will the Ute manufacturers learn that we always need lower mounting points?

Three things I really liked were the tailgate’s easy up and down function, the retractable step for easy access, and the strong engine hood struts.

GWM 2022 4WD Ute Front Interior

What about Cannon X?

The inside is actually very comfortable. Heated front leather seats have electronic adjustments (6-way driver, 4-way passenger) and side bolsters. But they are a bit stiff.

There’s also leather trim throughout the cabin, a leather steering wheel and some hard plastic.

A height- and reach-adjustable steering wheel (X model only) and plenty of glide make it easy for taller drivers to find a comfortable position.

The 7-inch driver’s instrument cluster looks good and has theoretical customizable functionality, but it’s haphazard in actual use. Buttons that work one minute don’t work the next.

However, the steering wheel is not the most comfortable to grip, but it has many controls and hides the paddle shifters.

Featuring a 9-inch LCD touchscreen that packs a host of infotainment and connectivity technologies. These include a rear and all-round camera.

Other nice touches include air conditioning, keyless entry and push-button start, tinted glass, an auto-dimming rearview mirror, a wireless phone charging stand, but wired Apple CarPlay and Android Auto,

GWM Cannon X 2022 4WD Ute Rear Seats

There are adequate storage spaces, as well as USB ports and 12V and 220V sockets.

Rear seat legroom is limited, but the seats are quite comfortable, with plenty of headroom. There are two air vents, a 12V socket and one USB port.

Cannon X engine and transmission

The Cannon X is powered by a 2.0-liter turbodiesel engine that produces 120 kW and 400 Nm. It is driven by a permanent all-wheel drive system and an 8-speed ZF automatic transmission. The lower range is selected by a button next to the transmission lever.

There is also a driver selection function in three modes.

Optional 4WD features include a locking rear diff, 4-wheel disc brakes (unusual for Utes), an electronic brake and an automatic hold function.

Suspension – on the front transverse arms and real springs. It’s fine on normal roads, but can be harsh on rough surfaces. A small load is needed to soften it.

One feature I LOVED was the steering selection via a button next to the shift lever. It adjusts the weight of the steering wheel in different circumstances, but maintains the feel.

The LDW calibration is set up correctly, but I still turned it off every time I remembered.

I have noticed that the engine has a very hard time holding the selected cruise control speed when going up even small hills and runs away a bit when going down. Other than that, it moved easily on the freeway.

On the sand, the Cannon rode easily with low end torque that provided a smooth riding style. On dirt roads and trails, the stiff suspension was really noticeable, but handled well.

With less engine power, you keep it in a tight torque band to maintain performance, which means more fuel consumption.

Drive modes are Eco (rear-wheel drive), Normal and Sport (AWD).

However, it’s relatively quiet inside thanks to good levels of noise suppression.

Towing at 3000kg is below rated, but the 1050kg payload is spot on.

Cannon X security features

With a five-star ANCAP safety rating (October 2021), the Cannon X has several safety features missing from any number of other Utes apart from the Isuzu and BT 50.

  • Forward Collision Warning (FCW) and Autonomous Emergency Braking (AEB) with pedestrian and cyclist detection
  • Lane Departure Warning (LDW)
  • Lane Keeping Assist (LKA)
  • Lane change assistant
  • Rear Cross Traffic Alert (RCTA)
  • Adaptive Cruise Control (ACC)
  • Traffic sign recognition and speed warning
  • Vehicle stability control
  • Tire pressure monitoring system
  • Reversing camera
  • Drum camera (passenger side)
  • Rear parking sensor
  • 7 airbags including front central airbag
  • Automatic collision unlock function
  • Function of automatic cut-off of fuel in the event of a collision
  • Help when starting on a climb
  • Hill Decent Control

Small pesky nitpicks.

Often, the driver’s dashboard configuration controls simply didn’t work. They would one minute, not the next.

To disable the LDW function, you need to go to the OSD menu every time. Keep in mind that GWM is not the only one with this.

The sensitivity of the touch screen sometimes has a slight delay. When the reversing camera turns on, it sometimes has to be turned off manually.

GWM Cannon X’s Final Thoughts

Cannon has many advantages both on paper and in reality.

As expected, the price is great.

It’s a little underpowered, but it’s only noticeable under load.

While the tech is a good read, it’s let down by the user interface and day-to-day functionality.

It’s a worthwhile Ute to buy, but be aware of the limitations.
