A man has died and a woman is fighting for her life in hospital after a house was “overwhelmed” by fire in Sydney’s west on Tuesday morning.
Firefighters were called to the single-storey house in Eltham Street, Blacktown, at around 5am following reports of a fire.
A man and a woman, as well as a third person, were pulled from the home by NSW Fire and Rescue Services.
The man, believed to be in his 60s, was treated by paramedics but died at the scene. The woman, aged in her 80s, was taken to Westmead Hospital in a serious condition.
Speaking on 2GB on Tuesday morning, NSW Fire and Rescue Superintendent Luke Unsworth said initial reports said a third person had been pulled from the home during the rescue, but his condition was unknown at this time.
“One person was potentially a neighbor. They broke into the area, trying to save other people. We are still trying to piece things together,” he said.
The fire is under investigation, and anyone with information is asked to report it to the police.
