A Gold Coast woman has spoken of a humiliating experience while shopping at a fashion store.

Vanessa Spano was trying on clothes when she reached out of the fitting room to ask the salesperson for a size up.

Without missing a word, she said the salesperson looked her over and interjected, “A size up, I think?”

Ms. Spano told 7 Life she was so shocked by the response that she simply replied politely and then moved on.

“So the girl asked me what size I was wearing and I said, ‘I’m wearing a large, so can I get an extra large?'” Ms Spano said.

“And in the meanest tone she turned to me and said, ‘We don’t have your size here.’

“Honestly, her words hurt.”

Ms. Spano said she realizes not all retailers cater to all sizes, but said there is a much more respectful way for an assistant to say that.

“It made me feel like I didn’t matter because of my height and that I didn’t deserve the same level of service as a smaller woman.”

“It’s a bit annoying, but the thing is, she had the nerve to say it in that tone.”

Spano said she quickly changed and immediately left the store.

“Then I got back in the car and cried a little bit”

“Honestly, if she had just told me, ‘I’m so sorry, unfortunately we don’t have an XL dress,’ I would have been fine.”

“But at that moment she was so rude to me and embarrassed me in front of everyone”
