Palestinian assailants shot dead a guard at the entrance to a Jewish settlement in the occupied West Bank, the Israeli military said.
A new attack could further fuel Israeli-Palestinian tensions, which have intensified over the past two months.
The Israeli military said the attackers arrived at the entrance to the settlement of Ariel late Friday and shot a security guard at his post before fleeing the scene.
The military has begun pursuing suspects in the West Bank.
A number of Palestinian attacks in Israel and the West Bank have killed 14 Israelis in the past two months.
Hamas, a militant group that controls the Gaza Strip, praised the attack but did not take responsibility for it.
“The operation proves that the revolution is raging across the West Bank,” said spokesman Hazem Qassem.
Tensions have risen this month in a major holy site in Jerusalem, with daily Palestinian worshipers clashing with Israeli police.
At this place is the Al-Aqsa Mosque, the third holy place in Islam, and a growing number of Palestinians come there to pray during the Muslim holy month of Ramadan.
Earlier on Friday, Palestinians threw stones and Israeli police fired bullets at a site that has sparked a wave of unrest in recent weeks.
Police say Palestinians inside the mosque began throwing stones and fireworks at dawn toward the heavily guarded gates leading to the Wailing Wall.
Police advanced into the complex, firing cropped bullets.
The violence ended about an hour after other Palestinians in the complex persuaded the stone-throwers and police to retreat.
Police said they had arrested three people. The Palestinian Red Crescent reported that more than 40 people were injured.
