Demonstrations against the government of Sri Lankan President Gathabai Rajapaksa, fueled by prolonged economic hardship, continued in Colombo on Saturday, July 9, as Rajapaksa faced calls from his own party to resign. Footage by Fabian de Alvis Gunasekare shows a crowd of protesters, some carrying a Sri Lankan flag, walking past a police car and a line or SWAT officers. Shortly after the release of this video, groups of protesters stormed the presidential residence and office in Colombo, after which Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe resigned “to ensure the survival of the government, including the safety of all citizens” and called for a “All-Party Government”. According to Reuters, Rajapaksa left the residence on Friday before the riots. Posted by Fabian de Alwis Gunasekare via Storyful
