Master Builders is a major organization representing residential, commercial and civil / infrastructure construction.

A few weeks ago, Master Builders members from across the country celebrated the National Award for Winning in Construction and Building.

The awards are the annual culmination of a nationwide mass process to determine the best of the best each year.

Participants must be nominated by a local association of master builders and must progress from winning awards in their regions to being recognized as the best in their state or territory.

Builders who have achieved this mark become national finalists, and their projects are evaluated against projects of their peers from all states and territories of the National Award jury.

The national winners were announced at an event in Cairns, seven of the winners are in Western Australia.

The Association of Master Builders WA (MBA WA) would like to take this opportunity to congratulate PACT Construction, blanc., McCorkell Constructions, Multiplex, GBSC Yurra, DORIC Contractors and Summit Homes.

Questions and Answers with MBA Director of Housing and Construction Jason Robertson

The question

I am going to build a small wooden deck in my yard as a winter project.

A friend said one of the key aspects I had to consider was the durability of the wood I use.

What does that mean?

The answer

Your friend gave you good advice.

The choice and use of wood goes beyond strength class or rating, which we can quickly discuss in a minute, but let’s focus on durability.

Estimates of durability mainly mean measuring a natural piece of wood and its resistance to aging, especially against insects and fungi. Usually strength is determined in four classes and they are numbered. The first class is the highest level, and the fourth – the lowest. For example, with flooring you would like any wood that touches the ground to be on one or the second level.

Also, pay attention to strength and risk ratings.

With strength indicators, it is a measurement of wood under stress. Grades are usually denoted F and assigned a number. With decking, it is generally accepted to have an F7 or higher.

With wood hazard ratings assigned a rating of H – this is for small nasty creatures such as termites and fungal growths. Levels are chemical treatments to help with hazards.

The higher the number, the higher the level of protection. With flooring a good idea would be H4 for any wooden element that comes in contact with the ground, and H3 for anyone that is not in contact.

As always, when in doubt, ask as many questions as necessary and with experts.

Good luck with your project.
