The Catalan giants travel almost in full force during their first trip to Australia with veteran defender Gerard Pique, most notably absent from the tour.

Captain Sergio Busquets is in flight along with Brazilian superstar Dani Alves, Pierre-Emerick Abameyang, Frankie de Jong, Memphis Depay, teenage sensation Ansu Fati and goalkeeper Marc-Andre Ter Stegen. “Barcelona” brings to Sydney 20 players with a team that will not look out of place in the Champions League or La Liga.

Along with Pique, teen forward Pedro was not included in the trip, as were American defender Sergina Dest and Danish national team player Martin Braithwaite. To the delight of some League A fans, Adam Traore was included in a team that will meet the All Stars on Wednesday night, giving him the opportunity to play against his namesake, Western Sydney Wanderers defender Adam Traore.

Barcelona’s first-ever match in Australia should attract a large crowd that could see the highest attendance of a sporting event in Sydney since the pandemic outbreak. More than 70,000 people are expected to attend the Accor Stadium.

Barça’s trip to Sydney has already made history, but not for football. The club was part of the first-ever direct flight from Spain to Australia, chartering a flight from Barcelona to Darwin, where it will refuel before completing a trip to Sydney.

The club ended the La Liga season just early Monday morning (AEST) before leaving at 10am. They are expected to arrive at Kingsford Smith Airport early Tuesday morning.
