The Heath Kerr sisters – Amelia and Jess – took key top-order wickets.

Stars all-rounder Annabelle Sutherland (45 off 22) brought her side close to victory before Jonassen’s heroics in the final over held Melbourne to 8-170.

Earlier, Sixers opener Susie Bates (82 not out off 67 balls) and captain Ellyse Perry (58 off 44) put on a 131-run second-wicket partnership to take 2-151.

With the ball, Sixers orthodox left-arm spinner Ecclestone was lethal and dismissed the dangerous Deandra Dottin (25) and Talia McGrath (four) to show why the England star is the world’s number one T20 bowler.

Ecclestone (4-17 from four overs) stopped the runs and took key wickets to restrict the Strikers to 9-134.

Perry, who scored 55 in Thursday’s win over the Brisbane Heat, was strong on the ground and hit both of her sixes with technical skill.

Bates regularly splashed the leg-side boundary and cleared the ropes twice.

Strikers Dottin’s opener was a key wicket for the Sixers in the chase. The powerful West Indies all-rounder came from all sides and hit three sixes with the phenomenal bat speed she is famous for.

Ecclestone lunged at the spinner and Dottin miscued one to go down the ground where substitute fielder Jade Allen took a superb one-handed catch.

Perry took three catches and rested the ball while her bowling team rose to the task.
