The wait on track for the start of the Grand Race was typically tense as co-driver James Moffat and Lee Holdswart led the field ahead of Greg Murphy and Fabian Coulthard.
Holdswart took the first turn, and Jack Perkins went off at the start of the #9 Erebus, spinning through the field on the mountain straight to bring out the early safety car. Jamie Whincup and Jackson Evans also broke away, with Matt Campbell sneaking in between them to avoid the carnage.
Coulthard and Warren Lough were 2nd and 3rd, followed by Greg Murphy and Moffat, followed by Garth Thunder in the 97 favorite in 6th.
Thomas Randle and Zach Best’s car was also finished for the day, with the #55 Tickford Mustang tagging the spinning Boost Car and crashing into the wall, destroying its suspension.
A restart on lap 5 led to mass carnage on lap 6 with Campbell completely collected as the #5 Tickford Mustang came back onto the track and also clipped the Heimgartner/Wood car with all three cars and all drivers recognized in order.
“I understand crashes happen, but it’s a very long race, some of these things that happened were completely unnecessary,” said a frustrated Brad Jones, while Wood was also inconsolable in the shed.
The restart on lap 10 from the second safety car saw the same front six followed by Russell, Murphy, A Davison, Lowndes and Golding.
Heavy rain came on lap 13 with Lowndes and Ojeda pushing and shoving while the Boys ran away from the #22 Coke Car, Tim Slade taking 9th and Matt Chahda 14th.
There was another safety car on lap 17 with J. Kostecki starting The Chase and many of the main drivers pitted for their first major appearances.
