The Melbourne Cup not only is it one of the great days in the racing calendar, it’s also one of the biggest days in Australian betting – and some of the staggering numbers being wagered are simply eye-watering.

The biggest bets usually come on the Call of Card, which is held on the Monday night before the race on Tuesday, and this year saw some of the strongest betting in recent years.

Outstanding was a $20,000 bet on Numerian at $91 by bookie Woodcock Racing to win $1.8 million. It was set up by a syndicate of cashed-up Sydney players, including Kingsley Bartholomew, Daniel O’Sullivan and Adam Sparrow, Richie Irwin and Scott Fitzsimmons, operating under the name Wolfden.

“We’ll see tomorrow whether I pay them or they pay me,” said bookie Warren Woodcock.

It wasn’t the only big bet made by the syndicate, who also backed Duais to the tune of $20,000 at three bookmakers at odds of $31. That would have netted Wolfden $620,000.

Wolfden also reportedly spent $20,000 from $18 on Smokin’ Romans, $16,444 on Without A Fight ($12), $15,000 on High Emocean ($61 to win $915,000), $10,000 on Grand Promenade ($101), $8,000 on Stockman ($31), $8,000 on Realm Of Flowers ($11), $6,000 on Emissary ($51) and $4,000 on Young Werther ($41)

But the biggest bet was made by Stephen Bradley, known as ‘The Fractions’, who said: “I had almost $400,000 on the favorite at $3.70.” That would bring in more than $1.4 million.

Most of his bets on the Deauville Legend were made through the bookmaker Robbie Waterhouse, with Mark Sampieri also taking some of the action.
