In the 89th minute, the Croatian latched on to Nikolo Borella’s cross into the box to head the ball beyond Vani Milinkovic-Savic to ignite wild celebrations.

Inter, still without the injured Lukaku following his absence in the UEFA Champions League defeat to Bayern Munich in midweek, looked lackluster throughout.

But Simone Inzaghi will still accept this victory with the joy with which it was met, while Ivan Juric will be left to regret what could have been for his stubborn visitors.

Despite the raucous atmosphere, both teams were initially wary, with Inter having more balls and more shots despite lacking a threatening aura.

Lautor Martinez’s gifts were surprisingly blunted in front of the Nerazzurri goal, while Nikola Vlasic forced the only really notable save of the first half in the 20th minute to keep the visitors on their heels.

The urgency of action became more pressing after the break, but even then golden chances were few and far between for both teams.

But when Brozovic beat the offside trap to rise in the box and flick a volley around the keeper’s struggling hands in the six-yard box, the roar around the San Siro was deafening.

For Inter, so toothless elsewhere, getting them back to winning ways was a dramatic rescue, but they will still know that such a bailout won’t come every week.
