Diego Simeone’s charges qualified for the Champions League before the last game, but were lucky not to fall behind in the first half at Reale Arena, as Rafinha gave up a few chances.

Athletic punished La Real for failing to pay for dominance when De Paul struck a great shot home 50 minutes before Correa secured the win.

The hosts played a goal in the 93rd minute through John Gouridy, who came on as a substitute, but it was too late to return; defeat leaves La Real sixth, having already qualified for the Europa League.

Mikel Merino headed narrow in width in the first shifts before Rafinha inexplicably hit the bar from a stop after parrying Jan Cloud with a low drive from Alexander Sorlot.

Rafinha wasted another great opportunity when he curled up wide when one-on-one with Cloud after unloading Sortlot before the midfielder shot into goal at the break.

Alex Remira interrupted De Paul’s turn from the edge of the zone after the break, while Mathews Cunha struck a deflected shot on the crossbar.

But De Paul came out of the impasse shortly after drilling his right foot into the top left corner.

Remira rushed to ensure that Antoine Griezmann’s goal drought continued before Correa doubled Atletico’s advantage with a curling finish in the 68th minute.

Guridi headed home at close range after Cloud parried Adnan Januzaj’s free kick, but Athletic held on to victory.
