“Disposed of”: Mold drives a family out of their home

A mother and daughter are left homeless after learning their home is seriously ill.

Mum Patsy said high levels of mold and bacteria were found at the Wentworthville home in Sydney’s west.

Now the couple is too afraid to spend more than a few seconds inside without respiratory protection.

Landlord, Hume Community Housing, is a not-for-profit organization that offers a wide range of housing options to those in need, from temporary accommodation, private rental, social housing and affordable housing.

“We lived here for 10 years; we didn’t know why we were sick and then we realized it was home,” Patsy told A Current Affair on Tuesday.

At the age of 47, Patsy was forced to move into a tent with her 17-year-old daughter Madeleine in her mother’s garage in nearby Bankstown.

“I feel like I’m a parked car and we’ve just been scrapped,” Patsy said.

Patsy has been diagnosed with a mold-related condition called Chronic Inflammatory Response Syndrome (CIRS), and says she takes 36 pills every morning.

Madeline is house trained in a garage and developed symptoms of anxiety and depression for which she was assigned an assistance dog.

Patsy is also afraid to use the bathroom at her mother’s house, which has a small amount of mold, meaning they have to wash and use the bathroom outside.

“We clean up in a bucket with a garbage bag. It’s unpleasant, said Patsy.

Testing of Patsy’s home by a housing provider found it was “reckless” for the home to continue to be occupied, according to the mother.

“They ignored my statement and left us living in the yard in the pouring rain, shower outside, toilet in a bucket,” she said.

Patsy says she continued to pay rent on the property despite the report’s findings of air pollution.

Hume Community Housing has since issued an eviction notice to Patsy after failing to find suitable alternative accommodation for the couple.

The group told the ACA it had tried to solve the problem by renovating Patsy’s home and offering her 15 alternative properties over the past two-and-a-half years – all of which were turned down.

She was told to contact the Department of Housing and Urban Development for help.

“The owner, I guess, was trying to insinuate that I was mentally ill, even after I gave them the report,” Patsy said.

“We deserve a home to live in. We deserve to be treated with respect.”
