Dmitry Tursunov says he turned down the role of Emma Radukan because of “red flags” | Emma Radukanu

Dmitry Tursunov said that he decided not to continue his coaching activities Emma Radukanu at the end of a trial period with the former US Open champion as they could not agree on terms and there were “red flags” he could not ignore.

Raducanu won the US Open in 2021, but has since fallen to No. 76 in the WTA rankings.

The 19-year-old Brit has been without a full-time coach since splitting with Germany’s Torben Beltz in April and has worked with Tursunov for some time this year. The Russian left the Radukana camp after her probationary period ended and now trains Olympic champion Belinda Bencic.

“I was leaving Emma regardless of whether there was another [player] available or not. We did not agree on terms, and there were some signals that could not be ignored,” he said tennismajors.com in an interview published Wednesday. “Our trial period ended at the US Open, but I was stuck trying to see if I could impress the team.

“She’s absolutely great, she’s a hard worker and she doesn’t think or act like she’s a superstar… It was a very difficult decision for me to walk away from a player I love and respect.”

“In my opinion, she’s at least a year out, but I’d say she’s probably a two-and-a-half-year project to be safe. Of course, it’s hard to say that and it’s hard for people to understand how that’s possible because she’s already won the US Open. But in my opinion, her game is very raw, and I think there are a lot of things that could be improved a lot.”

Radukan’s management did not immediately respond to a request for comment. Raducanu, who withdrew from this month’s Transylvania Open with a wrist injury, is scheduled to play in next month’s Billie Jean King Cup final.
