DRIVERS WANT RETURN S5000 – Automatic actions

Several riders who competed in the Australian Grand Prix in the Australian S5000 Championship have expressed interest in returning.

At the Australian Grand Prix, a record 16 S5000s entered the track and included the S5000 Beginners Quartet – a good sign for the series to grow.

One such newcomer was Formula Ford driver Conor Somers. Somers finished all three races and scored the most points out of four newcomers.

For him, it was a very big training, which he really enjoyed – and he says he would like to come back at some point soon.

“I would definitely like to continue working in this category,” Somers told AUTO ACTION. “It’s such a great category, I liked it, but we’re going to have to wait and see what we end up doing.

“Obviously the Ford Formula is the main focus at the moment, but I wouldn’t say ‘no’ to the larger S5000 cartridges, that’s for sure!”

AA asked Somers if he would participate in the Tasman S5000 series, which begins at the end of the year when numerous championships end across the country.

“More miles on cars definitely won’t hurt,” he said. “Being behind the wheel of something is good.

“It probably puts you one step above the rest of the competition when you start next season in Formula Ford, if you’ve already had those races in the offseason, so that’s 100%.”

Several people worked on the car this weekend, Somers exceeded his expectations.

“We’ve definitely climbed a little higher than we thought we were going to do,” he said.

“I enjoyed being a major newbie; I only drove twice (before), which was probably the smallest of the whole category. “

Somers even won the pole position in the inverted net after qualifying for 12th position, although the race did not go as planned, turned around on the first lap.

Zane Goddard has entered a series of two-round deal with the BRM team, which begins on Philip Island and ends at AGP.

The navigator of Tickford Racing enjoyed the experience and he would also like to return later this year.

“I’m not 100% sure (when I get back), to be honest.

Basically, it comes down to the budget, ”Goddard told AA.

“Let’s wait and see; obviously we will continue to talk to Mark Randall of BRM. I enjoyed racing in those two rounds; it helps me stay sharp for the second half of this year.

“If I could do more, it would be great, but we’ll just wait, watch and play by ear.”

James Davison made his debut in the S5000 race after appearing in the 2020 AGP short weekend. The six-time Indy 500 starter had a weekend to forget, and seems less likely to return.

“I really have a lot of time for the Rogers and Chris Lambden family, and for everyone involved in creating and promoting this wonderful formula,” he told AA.

“As always, it all depends on future sponsors. It’s no secret that my career and life in America is over. Let’s see. Never say never. “
