Dyson Daniels debut, New Orleans Pelicans vs Dallas Mavericks, matchup vs Luka Doncic, highlights, videos, stats, results, latest results

Welcome to the NBA, Dyson Daniels.

The Australian draftee is making his mark in his first real opportunity on an NBA court for the New Orleans Pelicans.

With Zion Williamson and Brandon Ingram both out with injuries, Daniels saw an extended streak in the first half of the Pelicans’ clash with the Dallas Mavericks on Wednesday (all times AEDT) and shined.

Daniels had nine points on 4-for-4 shooting, one triple, three rebounds, two assists, two steals and one block in 15 minutes of action – perhaps most impressively against Mavericks superstar Luka Doncic.

However, the Pick 8’s impact went beyond the stats, he played offensively, including with good spin and finishing, and was active defensively – even picking Doncic’s pocket twice.

More than anything, Daniels looked like he belonged on an NBA court as one of the most impactful players in a first half that saw New Orleans take a 66-64 lead.

“Daniels made an impact on both ends of the game in his first significant opportunity to play,” former NBA coach Stan Van Gundy said on TNT.

“I always used to tell the guys at the start of the season that everyone on the roster is going to have an opportunity at some point and it always does, it’s inevitable.

“The question is whether you’ll be ready when your time comes – and Dyson Daniels certainly was tonight.”

Daniels checked into the game with 4:35 left in the first period and was immediately assigned to Doncic in a tough start to the league and a strong test for the young guard. Defensive assignments aren’t much bigger, to be honest.

But the 19-year-old was ready to accept the challenge.

He stayed in the game until half-time – essentially playing 15 straight minutes – such was his impact, including a particularly impressive second term when he continued Doncic’s honest attack after the Slovenian’s early burst.

“Dyson Daniels is getting a long run and is making the most of it,” added TNT commentator Ian Eagle.

Daniels had already played three minutes of shutout time in the Pelicans’ season-opening meeting with the Nets, technically his official debut.

He was drafted eighth overall by New Orleans in last year’s draft.
