His fashion house said in a statement that Currage died Thursday night after 30 years of battling Parkinson’s disease.
Courreges launched its fashion house in 1961. His eponymous label has set trends for stars such as Brigitte Bordeaux and Catherine Deneuve, who admired the designer’s groundbreaking geometry, plastic mini-skirts, space-age silhouettes and futuristic textiles.
The house projects returned to the Paris catwalk last year after decades.
French President Francois Hollande paid tribute in a statement in which Currage described him as a “revolutionary designer” who “set a mark in French haute couture”.
