Sunshine marked the first Supercars laps at the Surfers Paradise street circuit in three years, with Will Davison finishing first in the opening practice session of the Boost Mobile Gold Coast 500.

The picture-perfect conditions were a stark contrast to Bathurst, but the result was the same: the #17 Dick Johnson Racing Ford Mustang led Practice 1, but by just a fraction.

For almost the entire session, championship leader Shane van Gisbergen looked set to lead another session.

Van Gisbergen’s 1:11.2401 was the class of the field for 25 minutes of the half-hour session, but his lead was stolen by Davison at the death.

The 40-year-old from the Gold Coast managed to eclipse the #97 car by 0.0188s with a 1:11.2213 to start the weekend on the front foot.

After a three-year absence, all 25 cars were eager to get an early look to reacquaint themselves with the 2.96km long concrete canyon.

Erebus Motorsport’s Will Brown set the first benchmark after edging the two Ford Mustangs of Davison and Cam Waters by three-tenths of a second after the first set of flying laps.

But it didn’t take long for championship leader van Gisbergen to make his first statement of the weekend, leapfrogging Waters by 0.23s from 11.11.2401.

That circle was posted at the five-minute mark and remained purple until Davison robbed at the end.

Waters completed the top three, while Walkinshaw Andretti United’s Chaz Mostert joined his former Tickford team-mate three tenths behind.

Previous Gold Coast Supercars solo winner Mark Winterbottom impressed to take his Team 18 Commodore to a top-five finish, while hometown rookie Brock Feeney managed just 21 P21s, 1.22s off the leader.

The familiar sights of cars flying through chicanes, clipping bunches of tires, rubbing walls and causing curbs to crash were back as Supercars marked their special return to Surfers Paradise.

Supercars will conclude its second and final practice session this afternoon at 4:15 PM EDT.
