Mother’s Day is special. We all know that.

It’s about celebrating moms everywhere … for those who are going to raise children, raise them or raise them.

For being around when it’s hard, for first walks, first graduations, first kisses and disappointments and, well, almost everything.

But here’s the thing.

Once breakfast in bed will be made with heart-shaped toasts, warm tea and gifts from the schoolyard with hand-painted candlesticks, it’s time to cook indeed about you.

What could be better than heading to the living room, sitting in front of the TV on a slow Sunday afternoon, leaning in front of the heater and watching a movie.

ET Extraterrestrial (1982)

It’s old, but will still bring tears.

Mary Taylor’s mother (played by Dee Wallace), who recently divorced after her husband left her to go on holiday to Mexico with someone new, was left to raise three children at her home in suburban Los Angeles.

When her middle son, Elliot, rescues an alien (accidentally left after his spaceship took off without him), hides him in his closet upstairs and tries to take care of him, things go awry.

At one stage, she hides them in a soundproof foundry, and goes out to look for food. She fights the aliens and does her best to protect her children.

Three billboards outside Ebbing, Missouri

Francis McDormand (who has received numerous awards for the lead role) plays the angry mother of Mildred Hayes. We would all be her if we found ourselves in the same horrible situation.

After the murder of her teenage daughter and when police did not detain her, she personally posted billboards urging local authorities to do something.

“Raped at death,” reads a billboard. “And so far no arrests,” read another. “How so, Chief Willaby? (performed by Woody Harrelson), ”the latter asks.

The storyline takes on a life of its own, but Mildred’s mother remains focused, determined to find out who committed the crime.

The Blind Side (2009)

Based on real history, Sandra Bulak (who won an Oscar for Best Actress) plays Lee Ann Tuohi’s mother, who adopts Michael Ocher, a young star footballer from a poor background.

Enter Mrs. Tuohi, who lets him know that he is talented enough to go to college and play football. She motivates him to be the best person, and in the end, she and he prevail.

Erased Boy (2018)

Award-winning actress and mother of two Nicole Kidman plays a cute, traditional mother of a teenage son who has problems and issues related to his sexuality.

The film, directed by Australian actor Joel Edgerton, examines gay conversion therapy and the role of parents in supporting their children’s decisions.

Stuart Little (1999)

It’s an old but lovely little movie, and it’s all about the Little family taking a mouse (voiced by Michael J. Fox) as a brother and sister for their only boy, George.

Mother (Gina Davis) is an angel here. Absolutely adorable. She doesn’t flinch that he’s a mouse, just make sure she has all the right clothes, bedding and food for her little boy Stewart.

Even if things go wrong, Mrs. Little forgives. At the heart of it all is the message of adoption and upbringing.
