How it happened: the results of the federal election Newcastle, Hunter, Shortland, Patterson | Newcastle Herald


Ethan Hamilton began working as a digital / print journalist at the Newcastle Herald in 2021 after an internship in the ACM podcast “Voice of Real Australia / Forgotten River”. Ethan is from a small town in Upper Hunter and has lived in Newcastle since the university began in 2017. He loves to tell communities and be a part of the region’s future.

Matthew Kelly

Matthew Kelly has worked as a journalist for over 25 years. He has been a general reporter at the Newcastle Herald since 2018. In recent years, he has made reports on topics including environment, energy, water security, manufacturing and higher education. He has previously covered issues including the impact on health and the environment of uncovered coal wagons in the Hunter Valley, pollution of the heritage of former industrial facilities and freedom of information issues.

Michael Paris

Michael Paris talks about politics for the Newcastle Herald. He joined the Herald in 1994 after working for ABC Newcastle. Michael spent most of his career as an editor-in-chief before moving into political reporting in 2017. He was a finalist for the National Sport of Australia Media Awards for reporting on the Men’s Tennis Club in Newcastle. He reported on the 2019 NSW and federal elections, state and federal budgets and local politics. He has also written extensively about the COVID-19 pandemic with a particular focus on data analysis and the impact of the blockade on the Hunter community.

Simon McCarthy

Simon McCarthy is a digital journalist working for the Newcastle Herald in NSW. He writes and produces videos and multimedia for Herald and Herald Weekender magazine, and co-produced the Toohey’s News podcast. McCarthy has worked as a journalist at the regional NSW since 2013. He joined the Newcastle Herald in 2017 with the Northern Daily Leader in Tamworth, where he worked from 2015 to 2016.
