Authorities issued a warning to motorists using the Midlands Highway on Saturday after a fire in a bush broke out on both sides of the road, south of Outlands.

“The Midlands Highway is under the influence of thick smoke blowing through the highway, which reduces visibility in both directions,” police said.

Fire brigades are fighting the 100-hectare fire with the help of ground tankers, and have also called in planes to bombard the water.

There is no immediate threat to the property.

Amid arid conditions and high temperatures in some areas of central and northern Tasmania on Saturday there is a total ban on fires.
