Jack Black has made the decision to pause activities with his rock duo Tenacious D after an onstage incident involving his bandmate Kyle Gass, whose comment appeared to support the assassination of Donald Trump. The incident occurred during Gass’s birthday celebration at a concert in Sydney, where he quipped, “Don’t miss Trump next time,” referencing a recent failed assassination attempt on the former president.
While the concert continued as planned after the remark, Jack Black has since issued a statement addressing the situation. Tenacious D had been scheduled for additional performances in Australia followed by dates in New Zealand, but these plans are now on hold.
The controversy intensified when Australian senator Ralph Babet called for the band’s expulsion from the country, demanding that Prime Minister Anthony Albanese and Immigration Minister Andrew Giles take action. Babet characterized anything less than deportation as an endorsement of violence against Trump.
Kyle Gass also expressed remorse for his comment on social media, acknowledging its inappropriateness and distancing himself from any endorsement of violence. He emphasized that he does not support violence in any form.
Tenacious D, known for blending comedy with classic rock over their three-decade career, began their creative partnership in the mid-1980s. They gained popularity through their distinctive style and have enjoyed success both in music and on screen, including a feature film and multiple studio albums.
Their most recent album, “Rize of the Fenix,” achieved significant chart success, reflecting their enduring popularity. Despite occasional controversies, their performances continue to draw praise for their unique blend of humor and musical talent.
Prior to their Australian tour, Tenacious D received acclaim for their performances in the UK, showcasing their ability to entertain while poking fun at the conventions of rock concerts.
