Matraville: Man shot near Woolworths

Police have attended the scene of an alleged shooting outside Woolworths in Matraville, with reports that a man suffered a leg injury following the incident.

A man was shot in the leg during a standoff with police in dramatic scenes outside a Sydney Woolworths.

Just before 4.30pm on Wednesday, officers were called to Bunnerong Road in Matraville to reports that a man was armed with a knife and had attacked two women.

A NSW Police spokesman said officers were trying to arrest the 26-year-old in a nearby car park when he allegedly confronted them with a knife, and police discharged their tasers and firearms.

The man was treated for a gunshot wound to the thigh at the scene before being taken to St Vincent’s Hospital in a stable condition.

Three ambulance crews and four police officers are working at the scene, reports 2GB.

The circumstances of the incident and the shooting of the firearm will now be investigated and subject to an independent review.
