Gislen Maxwell has been charged with suicide in a Brooklyn jail, and she may seek to postpone sentencing Tuesday for aiding and abetting Jeffrey Epstein’s sexual abuse of underage girls, her attorney says.

In a letter to the judge in charge of Maxwell’s case, Maxwell’s lawyer, Bobby Sternheim, said her client was “unable to properly prepare for sentencing” after officials at the capital’s detention center announced the death penalty on Friday and were suddenly transferred Maxwell to solitary confinement.

Sternheim says Maxwell was dressed in a “suicide robe” and her clothes, toothpaste, soap and legal documents were confiscated.

The lawyer also says that Maxwell “is not suicide”, according to her, a psychologist came to the conclusion, who assessed the 60-year-old British secular left on Saturday morning.

“If Ms. Maxwell remains on guard for suicide, she is barred from reviewing legal materials before sentencing, she will be deprived of sleep, and she will be denied sufficient time to meet with a lawyer, we will be officially postponed to a break on Monday,” Sternheim wrote. .

A spokesman for U.S. Attorney Damian Williams in Manhattan, whose office prosecuted Maxwell, declined to comment.

Epstein, 66, killed himself in August 2019 in a Manhattan prison cell where a financier was awaiting trial for sex trafficking.

Maxwell was convicted on December 29 on five criminal charges, including sex trafficking, for recruiting and preparing four girls for Epstein’s abuse between 1994 and 2004.

Prosecutors said Maxwell should spend at least 30 years in prison, citing her “complete lack of remorse.” Maxwell wants to get a term of less than 20 years.

The verdict will be handed down by U.S. District Judge Alison Nathan in a federal court in Manhattan.

Maxwell is in Brooklyn jail shortly after his arrest in July 2020.
