Mediterranean flavors at Sydney’s newest Coles Local

Coles recently launched its latest Coles Local in Earlwood, offering a range of over 200 Mediterranean products tailored to the local community.

In a first for Coles Local, this store features a Mediterranean destination with a curated selection including olives, butter, sardines, pasta, sauces and snacks, many of which are brand new to Coles.

Coles Local Earlwood reflects the rich tapestry of cultures that make up the suburb.

According to the Australian Bureau of Statistics (ABS), almost 40 per cent of Earlwood’s residents are of Mediterranean descent, making it one of Australia’s most popular suburbs for people of Greek and Italian heritage to live.

John Huggett, general manager of store development and Coles Local, said the store was designed to meet the needs of local shoppers.

“This is an example of how we are moving away from a one-size-fits-all approach when it comes to the design of our supermarkets, and instead offer food, drink and home products that are tailored to local communities.

“We know our customers love to buy food from local suppliers and in this store customers will find some of Sydney’s best food producers.”

Customers will be able to purchase traditional Italian bread from Nonna’s Bakery, a fourth-generation local family bakery that uses a recipe developed in the southern mountains of Italy.

Nonna’s Bakery’s Tony Sergi said his family is proud to supply their best bread to local customers in Sydney.

“We started baking in our home garage in South West Sydney in 2003 and today we create products with the same quality, consistency and patience that Nona insisted on,” Sergi explained.

“We are proud that the large Italian community that lives and shops in Earlwood will be able to try our family recipe that was developed in Italy and passed down through four generations. We hope they enjoy it as much as we do!”

In addition to Nonna’s, the store will feature baked goods from Baked&Co and Sonoma Bakery.

Award-winning Sydney butcher Sutcliffe’s Meats will also join the Coles Local family, while Sydney favorites Pasta Pantry and Bread Spread offer convenient food options for customers on the go.

Coles Local Earlwood will also be the first store in Sydney to offer the following successful Coles Local innovations:

  • Freshly warmed bread from a bread warmer in the store
  • Single serve ice cream from the new frozen dessert bar as well as the successful Mochi Bar with Macarons and Mini Gelato
  • Frozen fruit pick-up and weighing station with the ability to mix six types of frozen fruit
  • Four-legged friends haven’t been forgotten with Coles Local Earlwood offering a pet treat bar that includes a selection of delicious dog treats.

Sydney-based street artist Ox King was brought in by Coles to create a mural depicting the Earlwood community. His artwork uses blue tones to reflect the Mediterranean influence that is such an important part of Earlwood’s history.
