Medvedev and Tsitsipas advance to the Vienna Open

The top seed was early and late in both sets as he cruised through the first round with a 6-2 6-2 winner.

Next up for Medvedev will be a clash with former US Open champion Thiem, who defeated him in the semi-finals en route to triumph at Flushing Meadows two years ago.

Stefanos Tsitsipas beat local wildcard Denis Novak 7-6 (7-2) 6-2. The Greek ace is aiming to reach a third final in as many weeks after winning the title in Astana and finishing second to Holger Run in Stockholm.

Yannick Siner also advanced in straight sets against Christian Garin, but Taylor Fritz’s ATP Finals hopes suffered a blow after Denis Shapovalov defeated the fourth seed 6-1 4-6 6-3.

In Basel, world number one Carlos Alcaraz reached his 11th quarter-final of the season after a convincing 6-4 6-2 win over Bottic van de Zandschulp.

Meanwhile, Félix Auger-Aliasime recovered from a first set loss to deny Marc-Andre Hüssler. The third seed claimed his ninth consecutive ATP Tour victory as he looks to make it a hat-trick of titles in as many weeks as he recently dominated in Florence and Antwerp.

The Stockholm Roon champion built on his recent momentum with a 6-2 7-5 win over Alex de Minaur, but Naples winner Lorenzo Musetti was ousted in the deciding set by Albert Ramos-Vinolas.
