Michael Maguire has restarted his NRL career after signing up as Canberra’s senior consultant for the next two seasons.

Maguire was sacked by Wests Tigers within a year of joining them in 2019 and has not achieved much during his time at the club, who finished 2022 with his first wooden spoon.

The decision comes as Maguire looks to lead New Zealand to World Cup success in Great Britain, meaning he will not start his new role until the tournament is over.

Maguire made 11 appearances for the Raiders and led the Rabbitohs to the premiership in 2014 after a successful spell with Wigan in the Super League.

It is the second major coaching announcement to come from the capital following the decision to appoint Darin Borthwick as Canberra’s first NRLW coach.

“Michael is an excellent signing for our club and he brings valuable experience and knowledge to his role,” said Raiders NRL coach Ricky Stewart.

“He has excellent coaching experience at all levels of the game and we are very fortunate to be able to find someone of his caliber.

“I can’t wait to work with him and get him working with our coaching staff and playing group.”
