Björn Lomborg, president of the Copenhagen Consensus Center, says there are enough batteries in the world to “cover one minute and 15 seconds of global electricity consumption.”

“Essentially, we’re not going to switch to renewables or fully renewables any time soon,” Mr Lomborg told Sky News presenter Chris Kenny.

Mr. Lomborg said that if you’re in California, it’s “great” to have solar power, but “you can’t rely on solar or wind because they’re fundamentally unreliable.”

“So you need support,” he said.

Mr Lomborg added that people have an “absurd idea” that “we can just go to batteries” for backup.

“Batteries won’t be able to pick up most of the slack anytime soon. At the moment, there are enough batteries in the whole world to cover the global electricity consumption for one minute and 15 seconds,” said Mr Lomborg.

“So we have one minute and 15 seconds of battery life and then we’re dead.”
