‘Race to replace Boris Johnson’ sees Tory MPs try to become UK prime minister

Sky News presenter Peta Credlin says the “Melbourne Cup field is full” of Conservative MPs vying to be Britain’s next prime minister after incumbent Boris Johnson resigned.

“It looks like we have it with 12 candidates announced so far from all wings of the Tory party,” she said.

Ms Credlin said UK nominations would close at 6pm on Tuesday, with the first vote on Wednesday and the second on Thursday.

“By Monday, all remaining candidates will face the 1922 committee – where further votes will take place among the parliamentary party to whittle down the candidates to the final two – who must be confirmed by Thursday, July 21,” she said.

“When there are two final candidates, it becomes a battle to win the hearts and minds of ordinary Tory party members across Britain.”

Ms Credlin said the new leader of the Conservative Party would be announced on September 5.
