Satellite images show a roof collapse at Iran’s Evin prison after a fire

Satellite images taken on October 14 and 17 show Iran’s Evin prison before and after a fire broke out amid deadly clashes reported on Saturday, October 15. The London-based Iran International TV channel, citing Iranian officials, said on Monday that the death toll rose from four to eight on Saturday after the deaths of inmates hospitalized in critical condition. The cause of the additional deaths was not disclosed, the channel reported, but it said the first four deaths were due to smoke inhalation. Iran’s state-run Islamic Republic News Agency, citing a judicial media center, said the prison workshop caught fire during a “conflict between inmates,” specifically prisoners for “financial convictions and theft,” according to a machine translation. In videos circulating on October 15, gunshot-like explosions can be heard near the prison, and smoke and flames are seen rising from the compound.
