Shaun Lane Man of the Match Parramatta Eels v North Queensland Cowboys Preliminary Final

Cooper Cronk believes Eels second-rower Shaun Lane came up with the result of his career to lead Parramatta to a stunning victory over the Cowboys in the preliminary final.

The Eels led 12-6 before the score was tied 12-12 at halftime and found themselves down 20-12 with 22 minutes to play before storming home for a gutsy 24-20 victory.

Lane finished with 129 meters from 15 runs, four tackles, four offloads, a lineout assist, a try assist and 29 tackles with just one miss in a superhuman effort to win the match.

Cronk marveled at Lane’s ability to create chances every time he touched the ball, including Mikey Sivo’s winning try in the 65th minute with a superb pass.

“The fact that Shaun Lane is with his other half, every time he’s been in charge of the football he’s created something,” Cronk said.

“Whether it was a quick ball game or an offload. This movie is behind for Sivo, wow! I don’t think I’ve seen a better movie to pass out trying to win a game.

“It was a great second half from Lane.”

Cronk believes something should have happened in the wardrobes at half-time, and bet his smaller dollar Lane had a hand in inspiring and executing the comeback win for the ages.

“I wish I was in the dressing room at half-time in the Parramatta sheds because someone or something was said to encourage this group to do something they haven’t done often this season,” Cronk said.

“Come from behind and turn it over with defensive determination on the goal line.

“And if you want to pick who showed it, it was Sean Lane.

“His second half was the best 40 minutes of his career. It was so powerful.

“There was an interception that put the Eels in a good position for RCG to score. He came up with a couple of offloads. One from the back to Brown and try Sivo’s pass.

“So he took it on and the rest of the team followed.”

Michael Ennis was in awe of Lane’s passing skills but was more impressed by the inspired defensive display from Lane and his teammates.

“This is a film from Sean Lane, whose second half was absolutely phenomenal,” Ennis said.

“And the moment their season and their chance to make the grand final was on the line, the tackle defense was amazing.”

Gorden Tallis believes Lane has been instrumental in inspiring his team-mates to win crucial moments with equalisers.

“Sean Lane was outstanding,” Tallis said.

“To have a back rower who works great lines. He was all over the offense and then he came up with some huge plays on defense.

“There were a few chances but in the end the side that won, Parramatta, had more chances.”

Ennis believes Lane’s brilliant performance earned him the Kangaroos jersey.

“Maybe he just played in the green and gold against Jeremiah Nanai, who had a good season,” Ennis said.

“It was a game on that side of the pitch tonight and Shaun Lane came up with some great moments.”
