When Liverpool loses tonight, Manchester City will become the champions of England. Win, and the Reds linger on the shoulders of the leaders, one point behind, and only the last day of the season will come on Sunday. Rates are rarely raised higher.
Most of us will be cheering for Liverpool’s victory tonight because we all seem to support Klopp and company, but mostly because we just love drama. The prospect that Steven Gerrard and Aston Villa will beat City to hand over the Liverpool title on the last day is a great idea, no matter how you cut it.
Klopp has already confirmed that Virgil van Dyck and Mohamed Salah will miss the trip Southampton due to minor defects, which should not be a big problem. Liverpool are relatively well secured in those positions and the pair will be approaching the Champions League final and may return to Sunday’s game against the Wolves.
For Southampton it was a terrible end to the season, but they are safe from relegation, despite the fact that they have won only once – against Arsenal – in the last 10 games of the league. But they are coming into this “completely fresh” having an 11-day break since their last performance at Brantford, and have taken points to Manchester City, Tottenham and Arsenal at St Mary’s Stadium this season.
“Last summer we lost our best striker and other key players, and people said we would fight to stay away from relegation,” said Ralph Hazenhutl. “And we had nothing to do with it. The teams that are there would like to swap places with us, so this is a great achievement. Never forget that. ”
