Ten Haag is backing Maguire to step up in Varane’s absence

Maguire has made just two Premier League appearances since Ten Hag took charge at United – both coming in humiliating defeats to Brighton & Hove Albion and Brentford in August.

However, Maguire could be recalled after Varane was ruled out for next month’s World Cup, picking up a leg injury in Sunday’s (AEDT) dramatic 1-1 draw with Chelsea.

Speaking ahead of Friday’s UEFA Europa League clash with Sheriff, Ten Haag said Maguire has the ideal qualities to help the Red Devils.

“He always has to play an important role. He’s injured and he’s happy to be back and now he needs to get back to playing,” Ten Haag said.

“I understand the interest, but we are looking at United. We have to get the right results.

“It’s always about the game, about the presentation. As for its qualities, there are no problems here. He’s a great player and has a great ability to get the job done for us.”

Varane’s injury has put him at risk of missing the World Cup defense in France, with Didier Deschamps’ side kicking off their Group D campaign against Australia on November 22.

However, Ten Haag does not believe that club coaches are obliged to rest players during a busy pre-tournament schedule, saying: “I think it’s a wrong idea.

“They only have it [a few] weeks, and then the World Cup begins. You have to maintain the right form, the right form.

“It’s not optimal, but it’s something that national managers have to deal with.”
