The Davie brothers are set to add to Essendon’s legacy of father-son AFL draft prospects

Twin brothers and father-son prospects Olwyn and Jayden Davey have put their hands up to follow in their father’s footsteps to the Essendon Bombers ahead of this month’s AFL National Draft.

The sons of former Essendon small forward Alvin Davey Sr, the brothers have officially been nominated for the draft as father and son with 48 hours to go before Wednesday’s deadline, likely tying them to the club.

The AFL has until November 21 to submit an application to participate in the secondary bidding.

Under the AFL’s eligibility criteria, the pair come out on the slimmest of margins after their father’s 100-game career with the Bombers from 2007-2013 hit a low to set the framework for continuing the family bond in the red and black.

Their uncle Aaron Davey played 178 games in 10 seasons with the Demons.

The nominations are great news for Essendon’s tumultuous staff after struggling to acclimate Alvin and Jayden to a future at Tullamarine already set.

Alvin Jnr impressed over half a dozen games with the Oakleigh Chargers in Victoria’s premier Under 18 competition in the NAB league as well as an unbeaten Vic Metro National Championships campaign.

Although Jayden has been out for a year with a knee injury, he is still considered a talented forward.

Both graduated from the famous Xavier College in Melbourne.

Essendon Football Club general manager Josh Mahoney confirmed last week that the club had been eyeing the pair over the past year.

“They were exposed and they came down to training, both were able to train with our AFL team at various stages,” he said.

“We have been in regular contact with them throughout the season.

“Participation in the club was enough for them, they know what they are getting into, so they feel comfortable.”

The AFL National Draft will be held on November 28-29.
