A former AFL player has appeared in court charged with assaulting a former partner, court documents show.

Former Adelaide Crows player Jared Petrenko appeared in the Adelaide Magistrates Court on Friday charged with aggravated assault against a former partner.

According to court documents, Petrenko, 32, is believed to have carried out the attack on April 19 of this year in Mile End, where he also lives.

“(You) are alleged to have committed a crime knowing that the victim of the crime was a person with whom you were or were previously in a relationship,” the documents state.

The case was being heard in the court’s domestic violence division, meaning the media could not enter.

But outside court, Mr Petrenko’s lawyer, Nick Murphy, who is a former SANFL football captain, told the media his client would not be commenting.

He has yet to enter a plea and is expected back in court next month.

Mr. Petrenko retired from football in 2020, but played 76 games for the Ravens from 2009 to 2014.

He also played 116 games for SANFL side Woodville-West Torrens.

In 2018, Mr. Petrenko and his former partner participated in the “House Rules” program, taking fifth place.
