Record prices for petrol and diesel could force Australian drivers to reconsider their calculations for electric cars.

General Director of the Electric Transport Council Behjad Jafari says consumers often underestimate the running costs of cars with internal combustion engines compared to electric cars when weighing the initial and other costs.

“Now it’s much more on their faces,” he said.

State and territory governments already manage a variety of electric vehicle (EV) policies to curb greenhouse gas emissions, and transportation is considered the second largest source of pollution in Australia.

South Australia will soon abolish the tax on electric vehicles under the new Labor government, making Victoria the only state to pay per kilometer.

Queensland claims it “chose full throttle” with a $ 3,000 subsidy to buy a new EV and $ 10 million for additional charging stations.

New South Wales has a new incentive program for businesses thinking about an electric fleet.

On Monday, Australia’s top motorist launched a campaign to put transport at the center of the 2022 federal election. and recovery from COVID-19, including more charging costs and network readiness.

Unstable international oil markets have added a new impetus to the transition to electricity, as fuel prices have jumped well above $ 2 per liter, and in the regions even higher.

Critics say subsidies on EVs support wealthy Australians who can afford a new luxury car.

But Mr Jafari considers these buyers necessary for cars to enter the used car market in the coming years.

“The reality is that low-income buyers are buying used cars that are available to them,” he said.

“Usually these are cars that are expensive and consume much more gasoline.”

State and territorial electric fleets will also turn over time, putting more vehicles on the market.

And while the description of “middle class and above” may have matched early buyers, demand for EVs is now becoming mainstream, and buyers are looking not only at Tesla’s snobbish value, but at cars like the Nissan LEAF.

What complicates navigation, especially for business buyers, the incentives to move in each jurisdiction are different.

National fuel efficiency standards may be beneficial in the long run, but have been in too tight a basket at the federal level.

“Because of their own conflicts over climate, they have decided not to act on them,” Mr Jafari said.

Motorists know that governments need revenue, and some believe that congestion charges are a better alternative than the tax that EV drivers charge for every kilometer.

The fee that drivers pay when traveling on congested roads in major cities is supported by the Gratton Institute.

But officials know that congestion taxes are politically difficult to impose.

Some prime ministers and federal lawmakers have called for an immediate reduction in the excise tax on fuel of 44 cents per liter to eliminate pressure on the cost of living in the short term.

The Morrison government says an excise tax on fuel is needed to pay for roads.

But Treasurer Josh Friedenberg did not rule out a popular federal budget cut next week, a few weeks after the federal election.

The next step for electric vehicles is the so-called bidirectional charging, or vehicle-to-network (V2G) technology.

Once installed, your electric car can act as a home battery, storing energy that can be used to power your home or sold online – at the best price.
