“Because of their own conflicts over climate, they have decided not to act on them,” Mr Jafari said.

Motorists know that governments need revenue, and some believe that congestion charges are a better alternative than the tax that EV drivers charge for every kilometer.

The fee that drivers pay when traveling on congested roads in major cities is supported by the Gratton Institute.

But officials know that congestion taxes are politically difficult to impose.

Some prime ministers and federal lawmakers have called for an immediate reduction in the excise tax on fuel of 44 cents per liter to eliminate pressure on the cost of living in the short term.

The Morrison government says an excise tax on fuel is needed to pay for roads.

But Treasurer Josh Friedenberg did not rule out a popular federal budget cut next week, a few weeks after the federal election.

The next step for electric vehicles is the so-called bidirectional charging, or vehicle-to-network (V2G) technology.
