After spending last season in the second division, Schalke’s return to the top flight means Saturday’s first Revierderby at Dortmund’s Signal Iduna Park in nearly two years.

The last one, in October 2020, was attended by just 300 fans due to COVID-19 restrictions.

Saturday’s clash will be the 99th Bundesliga derby between the sides, with Dortmund currently boasting three straight wins, including a 4-0 triumph in Terzic’s first Revierderby, his biggest league win with the club.

“We are very happy. We know how important the derby is to our fans and to the region. We are aware of the responsibility,” said Terzic at his pre-match press conference.

“The derby is the most important match. We know we have to win the game. But we also want to win the game.”

With four wins from six matches so far, Terzic is aiming for another win before the international break, adding: “It would mean we are firmly at the top.”

Schalke sporting director Reuven Schröder is excited about Saturday’s derby but admits his side will be underdogs, with only goalkeepers Ralf Farmann and Michael Langer having previous experience of the Revierderby. Neither is likely to play this weekend.

“Our overall game will be decisive. We need to be confident and brave and we hope to go home with a positive result,” Schroder said.

“We deserved the opportunity to play in the derby after working hard all year. We can’t wait for that now.

“We all know that Dortmund is it [UEFA] Champions League side and has been on an incredible journey. So it’s a derby where one side is maybe a bit stronger than the other, but we’re happy to take on the challenge.”
