There is no option in the Northern Ireland Protocol, warns the EU Brexit

Michael Gove warned the EU that “no option is being considered”, including ignoring parts of the Northern Ireland Protocol, after Britain argued that a solution proposed by Brussels last October would exacerbate food shortages.

Gove, a senior cabinet minister, said it would not mean breaking the protocol, but he left open the possibility that the UK could pass a law repealing part of the disputed structure.

Negotiations between the UK and the EU are at a standstill over a protocol that clarifies Northern Ireland in terms of regulation and trade with the EU than the rest of the UK, bordering the Irish Sea.

The EU is refusing to negotiate, as agreed by both sides in the post-Brexit agreement, but the situation is causing tensions in Northern Ireland, where the Democratic Unionist Party is refusing to restore the distribution of power in the executive branch unchanged. Shin Fein nominated the DUP for second place in last week’s assembly election.

Speaking at BBC Breakfast on Wednesday, Gove said: “We are going to negotiate with the EU to achieve the best result for the people of Northern Ireland, but no option is ruled out.

“Liz Trus will meet with Marash Shefchovich, Vice President of the European Commission, tomorrow. They have a good relationship. Tomorrow they will try to make progress. I know they are both completely committed to us deciding to solve some of the very difficult problems that have arisen.

“You expect the UK government, when thinking about the security of the whole of the UK, to say that there is no option that is not being considered, and that is absolutely right.”

This came after Foreign Minister Trass criticized the EU’s proposals last October for “failing to address the real issues affecting Northern Ireland and in some cases taking us back”.

She said Lincolnshire sausages and other chilled meat from the UK would need a veterinary certificate to enter Northern Ireland, and products from outside the EU such as Thai green curry, New Zealand lamb and Brazilian pork would not be available in stores.

Trass said prices have risen, trade has been severely disrupted, and residents of Northern Ireland are exposed to different laws and taxes than those over the Irish Sea, which she said poses a threat to peace and stability.

“The answer cannot be additional checks, documents and failures. We always prefer a negotiated solution, but we will not shy away from taking steps to stabilize the situation in Northern Ireland unless solutions are found, ”she said.

Boris Johnson supports Trace, on Tuesday making it clear to Irish Taoist Michael Martin that the situation with the protocol is “very serious”.

But the EU has responded to its threats to abandon part of the protocol, ruling out any negotiations.

Shefchovich, vice-president of the European Commission responsible for relations after Brexit, said: “From the very beginning, the EU has worked tirelessly to offer creative and lasting solutions, showing flexibility in how the protocol should be implemented.

“Protocol, as the cornerstone of an exit agreement, is an international agreement. His talks are not an option. The European Union the only one in this position. “
