After almost a decade of the AAAA campaign, the federal government has announced plans to introduce in early 2021 a scheme for the exchange of information on car maintenance and repair (https://treasury.gov.au/consultation/c2020-128289).

The new law will make it illegal for car companies to conceal information from qualified independent mechanics so that the cost of spare parts, maintenance and repair of cars is affordable.

A short period of consultations continues, as previously outlined by Federal Assistant Treasurer Michael Sukar, who was the main initiator of the law. These consultations will end in late January, and the law is expected to take effect shortly thereafter.
