Stan Wawrinka will meet Daniil Medvedev in the second round of the Mosel Open after beating Joao Souza in straight sets.
Wawrinka went through two qualifying matches to earn a place in the main draw before beating Souza 7-6 (7-1) 6-2 on Wednesday in Mecca.
The three-time Grand Slam champion’s win was just his fourth tour-level main draw victory this year after a 13-month absence with a foot injury.
Wawrinka said after setting up a showdown with top seed Medvedev: “It’s the first time I’ve won three matches in one tournament in over two years, so it’s great.
“I’m getting confidence after winning a few matches so I feel a bit more relaxed about how I’m moving. I think the level was good from me and I’m happy with the win.”
Dominic Thiem also progressed in the indoor hard court competition, seeing off Richard Gasquet 6-3 7-6 (7-3).
Sebastian Corda was the first man to seal a place in the quarter-finals, dispatching third seed Lorenzo Musetti with a 6-3 7-6 (8-6) victory in the final match of the day.
At the same time, Alexander Bublik, Gregoire Barrer and Benjamin Bonzi became the other winners of the first round.
