Sydney’s first brand-new metro fast-rail station is now complete

Sydney welcomes a significant milestone with the inauguration of Waterloo Metro Station, marking the debut of the new driverless fast-rail Metro line after five years. Anticipated to revolutionize Sydney’s urban mobility upon its full launch later this year, the City Metro project promises unprecedented speeds and convenience for commuters. Waterloo Station, the first of six new stations slated to open in the coming months, symbolizes more than just a transit hub. It heralds the commencement of the Waterloo Renewal Project, a comprehensive urban redevelopment initiative aimed at transforming the inner-city suburb.

Aligned with the completion of the Metro line, the Waterloo Renewal Project aims to revitalize the suburb by introducing a dynamic mix of housing, community amenities, retail spaces, and public areas. The centerpiece of this endeavor is the Waterloo Metro Quarter, encompassing four buildings slated to accommodate 220 residences, including social, affordable, and private housing options, along with student accommodation, parking facilities, and commercial units. Emphasizing affordability, the Waterloo South estate is planned to allocate 50 percent of its homes for social and affordable housing.

Construction of the Waterloo Metro Quarter, intricately integrated with the newly operational station, commenced in mid-2023. The entire complex, featuring 70 social housing units, communal facilities, green spaces, and bicycle storage, is scheduled for completion by 2025. With Waterloo Station projected to serve approximately 19,000 daily passengers, offering a swift two-minute journey to Central, the redevelopment initiative holds promise for enhancing connectivity and providing accessible housing options within close proximity to Sydney’s CBD.

NSW Premier Chris Minns lauds the Waterloo project as a testament to urban renewal efforts, underscoring its significance in fostering vibrant communities while integrating housing and public transportation infrastructure. As the Waterloo Metro Quarter takes shape, it stands as a beacon of inclusive urban development, promising a well-connected, affordable living experience mere minutes from Sydney’s bustling center.
